Anguilla

Anguilla

Capital - The Valley

Anguilla (pronounced an-gwil-ah) is a British Overseas Territory situated in the Eastern Caribbean. It’s the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, lying east of Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands and directly north of Saint Martin. Anguilla offers stunning beaches, lavish accommodation and an inspired culinary scene, making it the perfect choice for a laid-back luxury holiday to the Caribbean.

Although there are no direct flights to Anguilla, British Airways and Virgin fly from the UK to the nearby islands of Antigua (8.5 hrs flight time) and St Kitts (10.5 hrs flight time via Antigua) with inter-island flights via local airlines to your final destination. KLM/Air France also fly from the UK via Paris/Amsterdam to Saint Martin, where a 25-minute ferry journey will deliver you to Anguilla.
Anguilla is also a top choice for multi-island holidays.

Anguilla is an ideal year-round destination as it’s one of the sunniest islands in the Caribbean. Temperatures average a balmy 80ºF (27ºC) with a fluctuation of only a couple of degrees in the high and low seasons. The warmest (but also most humid) month to travel is August, with the coolest, driest month being February. Even in ‘hurricane season’ (typically August – October), Anguilla is still fairly dry compared to other islands in the Caribbean, making it a good option for the school summer holidays.

Why Anguilla?

“Anguilla is our favourite Caribbean island, and we have been visiting it for over 25 years. Beautiful beaches, incredible restaurant scene and friendly locals … Anguilla has it all!” – Mike and Karen Williams, co-founders of The Caribbeanist

The Caribbeanist’s Top 5

1. Spend the day on Shoal Bay East. Consistently voted one of the world’s best beaches, Shoal Bay East is the picture-perfect Caribbean beach: powder white sand, crystal clear turquoise water and wonderful beach bars. It’s one of the best spots on the island.

2. Charter a boat and explore the island’s off-shore islets and cays. Our favourites include Sandy Island and Prickly Pear. Both have their own beach bars where you can enjoy a post-snorkel drink and lunch.

3. Dinner and drinks at Sandy Ground. The beating heart of Anguilla, Sandy Ground features some of the island’s liveliest bars and best restaurants. Our top tip – drinks at Elvis’ Beach Bar before walking along the beach for tapas at Sand Bar.

4. Spend the day at a beach bar listening to live music. The laid-back beach shacks, where visitors and locals congregate, are an integral part of Anguilla life. Each bar hosts a live music day featuring talented local bands and reggae acts. Sit back, sip a rum punch and enjoy the music. Try Ocean Echo on a Sunday lunchtime, and sample their famous ‘rumzie’ rum punch cocktail.

5. Enjoy a sunset horseback ride on the beach. Seaside Stables on Cove Bay offers beach rides for the whole family. You can even take a dip in the sea with your horse at the end of the trek.
